As technology becomes more prevalent in children’s lives, it’s important to encourage them to get outside and engage in physical activity. Click here for my previous blog post on reasons why outdoor play is so important.

Outdoor toys are a great way to do this, as they provide fun and engaging ways for kids to play and explore the outdoors. From classic options like a swing set to newer favorites like scooters, there are a variety of outdoor toys to suit every child’s interests and needs. In this list, we’ll explore some of the top outdoor toy recommendations for kids including options for physical activity, imaginative play and sensory exploration.

Outdoor Chalk

Sidewalk chalk is a simple but effective way to encourage kids to get outdoors and be creative. They can practice drawing letters and shapes, draw a road for their trunks, make an obstacle course or play hopscotch. The possibilities are endless.

Splash Pad

A splash pad is a great way for your child to stay cool during those hot summer days while also engaging in sensory play. This is a fairly sturdy splash pad with multiple spouts for water spray, and plenty of interactive possibilities. This outdoor toy is sure to make your kids' whole summer just a little bit more fun.

Balance Bike

A balance bike is a fun way to work on core strength while helping kids develop the balance and coordination they need to eventually ride a 2-wheel bike. With easily adjustable handlebars and seat, kids as young as 18 months old and up to 5 years old can learn the art of balance and graduate to a big kid bike in no time.

Scavenger Hunt

This engaging game includes 35 Find and Seek cards that can be used to create a scavenger hunt pretty much anywhere. The cards are designed to be nonspecific (e.g., find something cuddly) making it possible to play in most environments. The game is designed for up to six players. It provides a fun learning experience and can be played pretty much anywhere you travel during the summer. The cards include helpful pictures to prompt young kids who can’t read yet.

Bubble Machine

A bubble machine is a fun way to keep kids entertained while also encouraging them to run and catch bubbles. They can pop them, catch them or stomp them!

Sauer Swing

This is a classic outdoor toy that provides hours of outdoor fun! A swing offers vestibular input and is another great sensory based motor activity One nice feature of this circular swing is that it has two options: You can attach its adjustable ropes at two points to give a smooth motion or at a single point to make it spin while swinging. This way, it can grow with your kid. Switch to the spinning setup when they’re ready for a wilder ride. This strong and sturdy swing is compatible with trees and swing sets, but note that the hanging hardware is sold separately.

Basketball Hoop

This is a great outdoor option that not only works on cardiovascular endurance but also helps build eye-hand coordination and graded muscle control. You can play it in a pool or use the hoop outside the pool for the little ones.
